Caterpillars
179_7972.1-350.jpg

Creative Notes

While walking across Independence Park in West Jerusalem, these small and surprisingly furry creatures were found marching end to end along the sidewalk. When the lead caterpillar stopped, however, the others plowed right into him by the dozens. After writhing for a couple minutes as a pile, one brave pillar broke free of the bunch and lead the others into a conga line to the safely of the grass and beyond.

Technical Notes

Since these little guys don’t want to hold still, I used a macro flash to catch them in the act. The sharpness of the 100mm macro lens really comes out in this photograph. The image was converted to black and white to show the details in more contrast and it was cropped for composition. Levels were used to make the whites hairs stand out.
