The Intercontinental Hotel
crw_1514-300.jpg

Creative Notes

Looking up at the Intercontinental Hotel in Los Condes, I am first impressed by the complex facade, set on what otherwise might be a rather ordinary looking building. The lighting is very yellow in tone, setting it apart from the other white and blue buildings faced with glass. Its stepped sides give it enormous weight; a very solid building. Unforfunately its presense will be diminished with the construction of a new high-rise across the street. I choose an extreme angle to demonstrate in this photograph the power the building has.

Technical Notes

The strange pink or purple glow in the sky of this photograph is a result of the method that I used to create it. Three images were taken at three different exposure levels. When combined, they create an image with a dynamic range greater than what is possible with an ordinary digital sensor. That means that it sees more of what's there. As cars were driving in front of the camera on my side of the steet I was covering the lens with my hand to prevent white streaks across the photo. It didn't make any difference in the exposure because it was one or two seconds out of 30.
